The Session: Summer Beers

Coasting down the path
Sweetwater in my basket
Salt air on my face

Fat Elvis singing
Parking lot karaoke
Drinking Buffett’s beer

Barnacle Bill’s beer
Makes waiting for fresh oysters
A little more fun

the Session - summer beers

References: This post is part of The Session. The Session is a monthly beer-themed group writing project for bloggers. This month’s theme is Summer Beers and it is hosted by Better Beer Blog.

Our instructions this month are to discuss our favorite beers of summer. It could be this summer. It could be any summer. It should include some detail about the occasion on which the beer was consumed.

This trio of haiku gives a glimpse at three memorable beers I had at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina this summer. We’ve gone down there to vacation with family the last three summers. It’s nice to rent a bike for the week and ride up and down the lane. It’s amazing how a six pack of Sweetwaters fits perfectly in the basket. One night to our surprise, we stumbled upon Fat Jumpsuit Elvis crooning his greatest hits on the sidewalk of a bar in the local shopping center. When we got closer to investigate we found it was even better, in addition to singing he was also hosting karaoke night. With events so surreal, I figured it was my opportunity to try Landshark lager. There’s no risk of it becoming my “go to” beer, but it seemed quite fitting on a hot South Carolina night with sounds of Burning Love drifting across the Piggly Wiggly parking lot. Lastly, no trip to the beach is complete without the freshest fish and oysters you can get your hands on. And boy does Barnacle Bill have that. One day, we stepped into the line line to get some oysters and fresh grouper. Almost immediately somebody (perhaps Bill himself) tossed us a couple of cans of beer to ease our wait. Ya gotta love that Southern hospitality.

The Session: Beer and Music

Yeah, I’m a Parrot Head

that first sip of beer
takes me to the same place as
Jimmy Buffett’s songs

Dance a Little Jig

with whiskey and stout
and some fast Irish music
to chase it all down

Ah… Youth

out after midnight
my brother on the guitar
sipping stolen beers

the Session: Beer and Music

References: It’s time for The Session. This month it’s hosted by Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey. The theme is Beer and Music. The instructions are to share how you experience beer and music together.

As you can probably see from my haiku today, it was my brother that got all the musical talent in the family.

Here are some past haiku that touch on the beer and music theme:
