Maryland Brewers Rock

Maryland brewers
They don’t brew for the awards
But it’s nice to win

Written by Captain Hops.

References: Four Maryland brewers took home 7 medals for beer from the Great American Beer Fest. Plus, Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery and brewer Robert Malone won Best Mid-Size Brewery and Mid-Size Brewery Brewer of the Year.

Medal winning Maryland brews include:

Brewery Beer Medals Category
Brewer’s Alley Restaurant and Brewery Brewer’s Alley India Pale Ale Bronze English-Style India Pale Ale
Clipper City Brewing Co. Clipper City Marzhon Vienna Lager Bronze Vienna Style Lager
DOG Brewing Co. Pub Dog Black Dog Stout Bronze Classic Irish Style Dry Stout
Flying Dog Brewery Horn Dog Vintage 2007 Gold Aged Beer
Flying Dog Brewery Dogtoberfest Gold German Style Märzen
Flying Dog Brewery Gonzo Imperial Porter Gold Imperial Stout
Flying Dog Brewery Barrel Aged Gonzo Silver Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer

Maryland came in 10th place in terms of medals won. Neighboring states Virginia and Pennsylvania came in 8th with 8 medals and 5th with 12 respectively. Once again Colorado and California dominated with the most entries and the most wins.

I think the key take-away is that we have a world class group of brewers here in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. We need to proudly support them as beer consumers and clear away the archaic legal barriers so they can thrive.

Thing of the day: Virginia, Maryland, & Delaware Breweries

  3. @Dave – Thanks for the compliments. I have been having a good time on your site too.

@Al – I don’t think I will be able to get to DC. What are the details of the Flying Dog celebration?

  4. Wanted to let you know about a fun competition we are holding in celebration of Octoberfest. It’s called Chesapeake Beer Madness–it’s a March-Madness style competition between local craft breweries and user votes will determine the winner after three rounds. There are videos about the competition and about beer located here:

Help spread the word of this fun and informative competition! Thanks
