B1-66er wins the Beer Haiku Contest

In a highly scientific random drawing, I added the names of all the poets that contributed beer haiku since June 1, 2006 to a hat and allowed my two-year-old son to pull one out.

The winner is B1-66er the author and low-res photographer over at b1-66er’s archipelago. He also happens to be one of the masterminds behind Choka On It and the reigning English haiku slugfest champion of the world. (That was a blast!)

Congratulations B1-66er! You have won a free beer from the Captain or a mutually agreed upon substitute. I will be contacting you by email to make arrangements.

My deepest thanks and admiration to everyone that contributed Haiku to the contest. If I haven’t published yours already, I will be doing so over the next week or two. Thank you so much for making this contest successful.

PS: Did people like this contest? Do you want to see more contests? I came up with the idea at the last minute but I could have more contests and drawings if you are interested. Perhaps the next one could be a popularity contest and I could set up some kind of polling so that you, the readers, can vote. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

Happy Birthday to Beer Haiku Daily!

Day in and day out
the foam rises and words bloom
another fine dawn

Each day I wonder
Which new beer? What new haiku?
It’s not a bad job.

In case you wonder
the beer is a metaphor
we celebrate life

A week of beer!

Contributed by Captain Hops.

References: On June 16, 2005, Beer Haiku Daily was born. In the year since, I have actually kept the relentless promise of the title and published at least one new haiku every day. Some I wrote, some were contributed by my loyal and creative readers. Some were good, some… well… not so much. (But hey, I didn’t promise a good beer haiku daily.) In any case, the point was to have fun. Little did I know that I would tap into the vastly under-represented demographic of beer haikuists.

The past year has been a blast and I owe it to you. Thank you for partaking. Thank you for reading, commenting, and contributing to the universe of beer haiku.

If it sounds like this is my swan song… don’t be fooled. This is just the end of my rookie year of publishing beer haiku. I have every intention of becoming the Cal Ripken Jr. of beer haiku and I hope you stick around for the ride!

If you have not yet done so, please consider subscribing to my RSS feed. It’s an easy way of getting your daily serving of beer haiku delivered anywhere you like. You can get it on your My Yahoo, My Google, My MSN page or in your favorite feed reader.

Also, if you know someone who would enjoy reading or writing beer haiku please send them a link. Spread the word, spread the cheer.

Thanks again for joining the fun! Remember this is just the beginning. Cheers!

My Goodness.

At the ‘G’ and ‘D’
Dark, foamy, tastiness drank
Guinness is our fave!!

Contributed by Steve Hitchcock.

Editor’s Note: Our first haiku ever posted was about Guinness. It only seems fitting that we end our first year on the same topic. Thanks for the contribution Steve!

The best medicine…

the topic shifted
and laughter bubbled over
by the third pitcher

Contributed by Captain Hops.

This is the last day to get your haiku contributions in to be a part of the 1st anniversary contest at Beer Haiku Daily. You may submit your beer haiku using the contribution form or by posting it on your blog or webpage. If you post a contribution on your site, please let me know to make sure you get proper credit. The contest is a random drawing from all entries. It is not a beauty contest, so don’t be afraid to give haiku writing a shot even if you have never tried before.

The contest winner will be revealed on Friday, June 16, 2006, the 1st birthday of Beer Haiku Daily. They will receive a free beer purchased by Captain Hops and delivered by www.yougotbeer.com. (Substitutions may be necessary.)

If you are having trouble writing your first beer haiku, check out our tips on theme and style. Remember a haiku has 3 lines with 5, 7, and 5 syllables in the respective lines.

Good luck!
